The Juice, the Brand & the Copy
Why Branding, Marketing and Copywriting Matter More Than You Think
It’s winter in South Africa, and like many of us, I recently woke up with that dreaded, scratchy sore throat. I thought, “No way am I getting sick now!” So off I went to pick up something that would pack a punch of goodness, and I came back with a 1.5L bottle of Sir Juice Gingerade+.
Ginger is known for its immune-boosting properties, and I was determined to dose up and power through. I poured myself a glass, sat at my desk, and as I glanced over at the bottle sitting on my left, something unexpected happened…
The packaging caught my eye. Not just the bold branding or vibrant design, but the copy. The words. The tiny little paragraph tucked on the label that, in a few clever sentences, made me laugh, made me smile, and most importantly – made me feel.
Here’s what it said:
“Gingerade Plus. No, not Ed Sheeran’s alter ego. He’s musical perfection (and we’re fans of him too… mostly for his vibrant gingerness). Our ginger is a colorful composition of fruity flavours. Enjoy the invigorating goodness of apples, the sassy sting of lemons, plus the zesty zing of ginger. In here, vitamins are packed tighter than VIPs at Ed’s concerts.”

Brilliant, right?
Suddenly, this wasn’t just a drink. It was an experience. A brand with a voice. A product with personality. And just like that, I was invested. I even found myself wondering which juice I should try next, just to read the next story on their label.
This is the power of great marketing and where branding, design, and copywriting intersect
Let’s break it down:
Branding
Branding isn’t just about a logo or a colour palette. It’s about identity. It’s the personality of your product or service, the feeling people get when they encounter your business. Sir Juice’s branding is bold, playful, and modern, it tells you right away that they’re not your average juice company. That’s intentional.
Marketing
Marketing brings that brand to life. From the packaging design to the placement on the shelf, every touchpoint matters. Great marketing grabs attention, and more importantly, it holds it. It makes sure you remember the name when you’re standing in the juice aisle next time (and maybe even tell your friends about it).
Copywriting
Now here’s where it gets really fun. Copywriting is the unsung hero of most memorable brands. It’s the words that speak when no one else is around to pitch your product. And when it’s done well – like Sir Juice’s packaging – it entertains, engages, and builds trust. It humanises your brand and creates a connection.
That paragraph on the label? It made me smile. And smiling = emotion. And emotion = memory. Marketing 101.
So, what can we learn from this?
Whether you’re building a brand from scratch or refreshing your existing one, don’t underestimate the power of good copy. People don’t just buy products, they buy stories, feelings, and experiences.
